Northern New York Community Foundation accepts applications for college scholarships

WATERTOWN – The Northern New York Community Foundation is now accepting college scholarship applications from residents of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
Jefferson and Lewis County scholarships are for full-time undergraduate students entering freshman or junior year at college or technical school and for nontraditional full-time undergraduate students in any year of college or technical school.
In St. Lawrence County, NNYCF will award one-year freshman scholarships to students in the following school districts: Canton, Clifton-Fine, Colton-Pierrepont, Edwards-Knox, Gouverneur, Hammond, Harrisville, Hermon-DeKalb, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Morristown, Ogdensburg and Potsdam.
Applications can be downloaded and printed from the web site, www.nnycf.org. They also are available at high school guidance offices, the Jefferson Community College Financial Aid Office or the NNYCF office, which can be reached at 782-7110. Completed applications must be returned by April 1.
Scholarship amounts for Jefferson and Lewis County students are based on unmet financial need as determined by the student’s college and could total $12,000 over four years for freshmen, $6,000 over two years for juniors and varying amounts for nontraditional students depending on need.
Freshman awards to St. Lawrence County students will be up to $2,000 for one year, based upon unmet financial need as determined by the student’s college.
Students selected for a scholarship who have no unmet financial need will receive a one-time merit award of $500.
For the 2009-10 academic year, NNYCF awarded $648,704 to 330 students. The Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded more than $8.8 million in scholarships since 1980.
Scholarships are available from four programs administered by NNYCF. Herring College Memorial Scholarships are awarded to students in engineering, sciences, mathematics and related fields. Northern New York Community Foundation Scholarships are awarded to students in liberal arts, while Visiting Nurse Association Scholarships are awarded to students in nursing and health-related fields.
Designated scholarships go to students in specific school districts, including Alexandria, Beaver River, Belleville-Henderson, General Brown, Indian River, Lowville, South Jefferson, Thousand Islands and Watertown; students in the towns of Rutland, LeRay, Pamelia and the village of Black River; and students living on North Pleasant Street, Watertown.
The Catherine C. Johnson Scholarship is awarded to students attending one of the following colleges: Clarkson University, Jefferson Community College, St. Lawrence University, State University of New York College of Technology at Canton or SUNY Potsdam.
The North Country Human Resources Association has established a scholarship for Jefferson and Lewis County students pursuing programs in human resource management, business management, business administration, employee health and safety, and labor relations. Students should apply to the Foundation using the regular scholarship application forms.
NNYCF also awards the Rotary Purple Heart Scholarship to residents of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties who have been awarded the Purple Heart or to their dependents (spouse or child). Applicants for this scholarship may be in any year of full-time undergraduate study. Applications are accepted throughout the year until all funds available for the academic year are awarded.
The Fort Drum Chapter of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division, Inc. has established the 10th Mountain Division (Light) Scholarship for current and former 10th Mountain Division (LI) members and their Families (spouse or child). NNYCF is affiliated with Scholarship America’s Dollars for Scholars program. Foundation scholarship recipients who attend colleges participating in the Dollars for Scholars matching grant program may be eligible for additional funding from their college. Last year, this program added more than $16,500 in scholarship funds to Foundation recipients.
The Northern New York Community Foundation, Inc. manages and administers a permanent endowment and funds for the benefit of the community. Guided by a board of community leaders, it makes grants to support the work of nonprofit organizations and provides scholarships to individuals in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
