SoI member turns in C-4 stockpile
Tuesday, 12 August 2008
FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER, Iraq – A stockpile of C-4 explosive material was turned into Coalitions forces by a member of the Sons of Iraq in Jisr Diyala August 10.
The explosives were discovered after a group of children unearthed them while playing in their back yard. The father of the children, a local Jisr Diyala citizen, immediately gathered the explosives and delivered them to a nearby member of the SoI.
The SoI member delivered the explosives to Soldiers of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, TF 1-35 Armor, who quickly handed the explosives over to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team on site.
The small stockpile contained 10 blocks of C-4 plastic explosives, each weighing just less than one-and-a-half pounds. The explosives are the largest concentration of captured plastic explosives found by TF 1-35 Armor since the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division helped secure the area.
“Having these explosives turned in by the SoI obstructs the enemy’s ability to attack innocent civilians inside the Mada’in Qada area”, said Maj. Wayne Marotto, a spokesmen for the 2nd BCT, 1st Armd. Div.
After inspecting the explosives, EOD determined that the blocks were all manufactured within the last three years and were of Iranian origin.
