Modern Pioneers make commitment to each other; country

CAMP STRIKER, Iraq - When recently married Sgt. Jesus Lomeli and his wife, Spc. Ashley Jayne, vowed to make a lifelong commitment to each other, the deployed newlyweds also committed to the Army.

The couple was married three months ago while on mid-tour leave, and on Nov. 12, they re-enlisted for four more years in the Army in a dual ceremony in front of the 47th Forward Support Battalion Headquarters.

“I have served with the Modern Pioneers for four-and-a-half years, and the Soldiers here are like a family to me,” said Lomeli, from Fillmore, Calif., a team leader in the convoy security platoon, after the reenlistment.  “My wife is my family now, and this was a way for us to have new opportunities and stay together as a family.”

“Given everything we’ve done together, this definitely looked like the next logical step,” said Jayne, from Jackson, Mich., a combat medic assigned to the brigade commander’s personal security detail.  “I guess this makes us a pretty good match.”

No one could disagree with the logic that their re-enlistment was a fitting step in their time together as Modern Pioneers, a story that will only be complete when they redeploy home together and move to their new duty station in California.

“Given the economy and the hard times, we wanted to do something for each other to ensure we had a stable life together,” said Lomeli.

The couple both re-enlisted and requested an assignment near Lomelis’ hometown near Fort Irwin, Calif. Both Soldiers intend to pursue careers in the Army nursing program as officers.

Given their auspicious start, the Army can expect an impressive future from this pair of warrior spouses.

Thank you for all you have done. Especially for taking care of and supporting each other during your long journey in Kirkuk. I know that a simple Thank You hardly seems like much, but it truly comes from my heart. My daughter, Sgt Jasmin Ringlaben, traveled with you on your journey. You will never know how grateful I am that she came home. Since one person does not fight a war alone, I owe each and every one of you a debt of gratitude. My prayers continue to be for all of you. THANK YOU!
